What happens when you take the same train journey, over and over again?
Every summer, Seth and his family travel north from the Netherlands to Finland. They pass through Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm before taking an overnight ferry across the Baltic Sea to Helsinki.
Why take the same journey by train, year after year?
"The stations, crossings, trains and ferries have taken on a meaning of their own," Seth writes. "We could fly. People often ask why we don’t. The simplest answer is that we no longer think of the journey as the thing standing between us and the holiday. The journey has become a ritual in our family life."
To the edge of the world and back
Last summer, journalist Maya Toebat travelled 3,000 kilometres north from her home in Brussels all the way to Svalbard, Norway, taking a combination of trains and a sailboat to reach the remote archipelago near the North Pole.
One month later, she was back on mainland Norway, heading south on her journey home. Along the way, she hiked and camped as much as possible, trekking part of the famous Seven Sisters mountain range, sleeping in a free cabin near Trofors Station and setting up tent on an island near Oslo.
